Formal probate is used to handle more complex and/or contested estates of a decedent and are typically heard by a judge.

Informal probate is an administrative proceeding used to handle the estate of a decedent and is generally processed by a MUPC Magistrate instead of a judge.    An informal order can be issued as soon as 7 days after the date of death if all requirements are met.

Voluntary administration is a simplified procedure for an estate of a decedent with minimal assets valued at $25,000 or less (excluding a car) and with no real estate.
